rule of 3rds + camer shots. bang bang! (lec wk 3)

The rule of Thirds is the rule that states that an image should be imaged ad divided into 9 equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. The important elements should be placed among these intersections. It's a bit of visual work, got that image in your head yet? OK, now imagine placing the element smack bang in the centre, its simple I'll agree to that, although if you align the element within these vertical or horizontal lines, the overall image itself is said to create more tension, energy and interest in the composition, than a simple placing the element in the centre would create.

It is very common when photographing or filming someone to have the subject against the vertical line and their eyes placed on the horizontal line. If there was a scene where the character was moving or even running, this placing would be essential due to the extra space being placed in front of the character, showing this movement. James Bond would make good use of these kinds of shots.

If this description was a bit muddled, hopefully this youtube video can help

Camera angles, shot types and movement of camera are essential when making a film or photography, without them, your screwed.
Camera angles marks the specific location at where the camera is placed, they create emotion, distance from the character and their audience, and a feel of the scenery, even genre depending on its technique. High angle shot can make a character seem small and vulnerable, whereas a low angle shot makes the character appear ginormous! Other examples of shot types are explained in this documentary. enjoy!
