lights, camera, CINEMA! (lec week 4)

Dodgy colour? Bad sound effects? small screen? uncomfortable seats? yeah, you guessed it, the old school cinemas. Now obviously back then, they must have to alright to some degree or no one would attend them, but what were they really like back then, compared to now?

Back in those days films were not narratives, they were quite short, sometimes only 1 minute or 2, often of people doing something that was very mundane, like moving around or sitting down. When footage like this first came out, it blew peoples minds away! Cameras were quite large as well, but this caused caused a problem as they could not move easily around the set like the ones we have today do. There were no tripods as well, film production itself took a long time, and i mean watching the grass grow, long.

Sound then was not like it is today at all, with out amazing Dolby surround sound that could blow your ears off! Nope, there was not such thing back then. Sound was often played on an instrument inside the theater itself. Drive ins were the 'in' thing to do back then also, you could easily smuggle people in the boot of your car and get away with it. Cinema itself and movies have revolutionized and come so far in development that i don't know what i would do if some insane time machine took me back to the black and white ages where it was back to basics!

Its always so interesting to hear about how far technology has come in terms of cinema, but its always even more interesting to think about how our technology today will be so 'old school' in just a few years... cinema is great!
